La Chaîne de l’Espoir
La Chaîne de l’Espoir, a French association created in 1994 by Pr Alain Deloche and chaired today by Dr Eric Cheysson, is an actor of international solidarity committed to give access to care and school health services to the most vulnerable children, their families and their communities across the globe. La Chaîne de l’Espoir is active in 30 countries.
The context
In Vietnam, regional inequalities represent an obstacle in accessing health care services for the rural population. It is very complicated for families living in rural areas when their child’s disease can only be treated in hospitals in large cities, as in Hô Chi Minh City, where medical standards are way higher than in the province’s hospitals. Indeed, to the operation cost in itself will be added the travel and accommodation costs for the child and his or her family before the operation, during hospitalization and for the duration of post-operative care.
Children’s pavilion
In order to meet the identified needs, La Chaîne de l’Espoir, together with the Franciscan and Dominican nuns, decided to open a children’s pavilion in Hô Chi Minh-City, a housing structure with a capacity of 10 beds that welcome indigent children who need medical exams or a surgical operation. They also benefit from the free care and transport; all costs being covered by La Chaîne de l’Espoir. Namely, the average cost of cardiac surgery is 3000 euros.
The Children’s Pavilion offers the following advantages:
- Full medical care: located near hospital facilities, the children’s pavilion provides medical and social care for indigent children, who can stay there with one of their family member
- Social follow-up: children benefit from free care and free transport and accommodation, as well as the accompanying adult, all these expenses being covered by La Chaîne de l’Espoir. Social care is also provided in order to ensure an appropriate recovery of the child once he is back home.
- Places of learning: teaching and playful activities as well as health, hygiene and nutrition education workshops are organized within the children’s pavilion.
- Economic utility: the running costs of the pavilion, as a housing structure, are six times lower than hospital expenses. Through the savings thus generated, it is possible to give access to health care to the greatest number of children.
Project history
Opened in July 2018, the children’s pavilion has welcomed, over one year, more than a hundred children, of which 25 have also benefited from a cardiac surgery. In 2020, regarding the needs in terms of surgery, La Chaîne de l’Espoir will continue to welcome children, with a specific goal of supporting the care of 30 children who need a cardiac surgery.
Project objectives
The overall objective of this project is to promote access to essential medical and surgical care for poor children in rural areas. It is based on three components:
- Identify the most vulnerable children
- Organize their transfer, reception, care and follow-up
- Covering medical and social expenses
Thanks to solidary bibs, donations received will contribute to the financing of children’s surgeries, to their stay in the children’s pavilion as well as to the running costs of the pavilion. Thus, a runner will have the opportunity to involve himself to give a child the treatment he needs. “A healthy heart for a sick heart”.

La Chaîne de l’Espoir and UTMB® 2022
Opened in 2018, in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, the Children's Pavilion welcomes more than 100 indigent children for medical checkups or surgery.
Under the direction of the Dominican Sisters and Chain of Hope, each year about 30 children with serious heart diseases are operated on
In 2020, the UTMB edition allowed us to operate on 12 children and despite the pandemic, we were able to operate on 3 children thanks to your solidarity.
In 2022, we still have, unfortunately, children on our waiting list who are waiting to be operated to continue living and our minimum objective is to operate on 10 children.
