UTMB®: a record number of applications!

With more than 25,000 applications, the UTMB® races gave rise, once again, to a huge enthusiasm. However, for safety reasons, organizational standards and to preserve the environment, we must limit the number of registered runners. This is achieved through qualifying points and a rigorous draw that allows fair entry to UTMB® races. All those who did not get drawn will benefit from better registration conditions in 2020. As for the others, let the adventure begin!
Registrations results
This year, for each of the races and despite the qualifying points requested, the lottery was very severe: :
- UTMB® less than 1 in 3 chances of getting drawn (340% sold out - 7 861 applicants)
- CCC® less than 1 in 3 chances of getting drawn (363% sold out - 6 876 applicants)
- TDS® less than 1 in 2 chances of getting drawn (223% sold out - 3 566 applicants)
- OCC less than 1 in 5 chances of getting drawn (508% sold out - 6 101 applicants)
- PTL® registration upon presentation of a file - 382 applicants)
- MCC 73% sold out - 732 applicants -, so it is still possible to register for volunteers, local runners, partners and members of the organization.
- YCC 83% sold out - 160 applicants -, so it is still possible to register for this race dedicated to younger athletes.
That is 25,678 applicants compared to 21,700 in 2018.
The race with the highest number of women is still the OCC with 33% women (vs 25% in 2018), followed by the MCC (26%), CCC® (20%), TDS® (16%) and UTMB® (11%). Among elite athletes as women represent 30% of the entrants.

* ITRA index performance
As for the UTMB® race, Americans are the best represented with 20% of the elite athletes. They are followed by Spain (17%), then both France and the United Kingdom (11%) and China which occupies the 5thposition with 8 athletes registered for the UTMB®.
Thinking about a different entry process
This constant increase in the number of applicants led the organization to notice that the current entry process based solely on qualifying points is reaching its limits. To be in line with the health policy supported by the UTMB®, the 15 points in 2 years introduced in 2016 are a threshold not to be exceeded. The organization is currently working to improve the qualifying process for the UTMB® races. This evolution will take place gradually and will not call into question the advantages acquired in the past years.
A change is on the horizon....
