Registrations: all you need to know for 2021

In April 2019, we announced a new, more flexible and open registration process to access the UTMB® races. This new system has been redesigned to meet the ever-increasing demand for registrations as shown in the following figures:
- 21,700 applications in 2018
- 26,022 applications in 2019 (+19.9%)
- 32,000 applications in 2020 (+23%)
The 4 historic races (UTMB®, TDS®, CCC®, OCC and PTL®) were 455% complete (compared to 359% last year):
- UTMB® less than 1 in 6 chances of being selected (415% sold out - 9 546 applicants)
- CCC® less than 1 in 5 chances of being selected (522% sold out - 9 922 applicants)
- TDS® less than 8 in 10 chances of being selected (158% sold out - 2 529 applicants)
- OCC less than 1 in 8 chances of being selected (724% sold out - 8 685 applicants)
In order for all runners to be able to enter the race of their dreams one day, the organization had to innovate and renew the entry process."The current registration system has reached its limits. To continue to meet the expectations of these thousands of trail runners, it was necessary to improve our entry process. We have implemented a more flexible, more open system. It is also very important for us to respect runners health" Michel Poletti, co-director of the UTMB®. New registration dates, running stones, drawing of lots, qualification points... here are the 4 things you need to know to take part in the UTMB® in 2021.
Registration with running stones
Running stones allow access to the UTMB® Mont-Blanc without having to go through the lottery. Running stones are awarded to the finishers of a network of races that are part of the 2020 world circuit. How do I collect running stones?
Races " by UTMB® "
The number of running stones acquired by completing a " By UTMB® " race is equal to 3 times the number of ITRA points awarded by the race. For example, being a finisher in a 6-ITRA-point "By UTMB®" race allows you to gain 18 UTMB® running stones.
UTWT Races
The number of running stones acquired by completing a UTWT race is equal to the number of ITRA points awarded by the race. For example, being a finisher of a 6-ITRA-point UTWT race allows you to gain 6 UTMB® running stones. This only applies to races on the UTWT race calendar. How do I apply for entry with running stones? To register for a 2020 race, you must have enough running stones at the time of registration:
- UTMB® : 18 running stones
- CCC® : 15 running stones
- TDS® : 15 running stones
- OCC : 12 running stones
Validity of running stones
Running stones expire after 4 years. For example, if I collected 18 running stones in 2020, I can use them to enter a 2021, 2022, 2023 and/or 2024 event. If they are not used during those 4 years, they cannot be used for 2025 registration.
Entering the lottery
Runners who do not have enough running stones to register for the race of their choice may participate in the lottery. From 2020, the lottery will become more flexible. Runners who are not lucky on their first attempt through the lottery will have better chances of being selected in following years. The probability of being selected is therefore proportional to the number of times a runner has failed to gain entry in the previous years. Runners can also decide to apply for a different race each year (ex: apply for the UTMB® the first year, then for the TDS® the following year) or to take a/or more than one, year break from their running.
Lottery process
It is a ticket with your name for the lottery. If you have 2 tickets, your name appears twice (“in the hat”), thus doubling your odds in the lottery vs someone who only has 1 ticket. If you have 3 tickets, your name appears three times, thus tripling your odds in the lottery, and so on.
Qualifying Points
Registration is only possible for runners who have previously completed some of the races included in the UTMB® list of qualifying races between January 1st, 2019 and December 31st, 2020:
UTMB® : 10 points acquired between 01/01/2019 and 31/12/2020 (in 2 races maximum)
CCC® : 6 points acquired between 01/01/2019 and 31/12/2020 (in 2 races maximum)
TDS® : 8 points acquired between 01/01/2019 and 31/12/2020 (in 2 races maximum)
OCC: 4 points acquired between 01/01/2019 and 31/12/2020 (in 2 races maximum)
Finishers of the 2018 UTMB® races may also use these races as qualifying races.
